Jesus posed over 300 questions throughout the gospels. I think he knew that we learn much more when we are required to think about things than when we are just told the answers. I know that in all of my time spent in educational settings, I was often bored and usually did not retain information when a teacher just handed out knowledge to us. My favorite classes were the ones where we were challenged to seek the answers out for ourselves. So I do not think that it’s a coincidence that Jesus used the same style while he was here.

He was also asked 183 questions, of which he only answered 3 directly. Most of the questions he answered with questions of his own. These are the three that he answered directly:

  1. Pilate therefore said to him, “Are you a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into this world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”

John 18:37 NKJV

  1. Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.”

Luke 11:1-4 NKJV

  1.  “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Matthew 22:36-40 NKJV

Throughout this devotional, we will be looking at the questions that Jesus asked and examining our own hearts to see how we would answer them. Some may seem easier than others! But either way, I encourage you to take the time to really dig deep and answer these questions honestly for yourself.
